Bible study week 9: Life going forward

Last week we looked at how we live as Christians and how ultimately Love is the key to how we should live. Love for God, Love for others and Love for ourselves. This week we are going to look at what Paul says about the future and what is to come.

This is not a look at what will happen day by day, in time we can go through Revelation and think properly about it. We are going to look at how we as Christians should live in the knowledge that one day Jesus will return.

What you will need

  1. Bible
  2. Pen and Paper
  3. Access to Youtube

Watch the video on the Day of the Lord by the Bible Project

We have looked at the Thessalonians, a people at a crossroads dealing with a culture and people that hate what they believe in. This Video looked at the ultimate plan that God has for the world and what is coming next.

Read 1 Thessalonians 5:1-28

  1. What does Paul call the Thessalonians to do in verses 6-11
  2. List the types of people Paul talks about in verse 14
  3. Look at verse 15, do you think this is easy? Think of times where it is and where it isn’t.

As Paul ends this letter, he is wants to encourage his friends in their journey going forward. Paul knew that a lot of people were talking about and waiting for the return of Jesus. But he doesn’t want them to dwell on this. They still live here on earth and they have work to do.

In verse 2 Paul say’s “for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.” And goes on to talk about how we live differently compared to others who don’t believe. This leads him to encourage how they live.

In verse 11 Paul say’s “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” He knows how they are living and wants them to continue with the good work.

Verse 12 – 28 are Paul's final words for encouragement and can be used as an instruction for how Christians should live.

List out in your own words what Paul is calling us to do.

In this book we saw the effect that faith in Jesus can have in our lives. going forward let’s take some time to look at Jesus and the sort of life that he modelled for us. We will be looking at the book of Mark starting from next week.

Take some time to pray, this week I want you to write out what you pray. Writing it out can create an opportunity to mark a time in our lives, just remember to date the prayer you write.
